Temple Leadworks carried out extensive repairs to a deteriorated clocktower in Ware, Hertfordshire, in 2022.
Rot had caused significant damage to the timber structure, requiring the clocktower to be carefully dismantled so that structural repairs and replacement work could be undertaken.
The challenge
All four timber sides of the clocktower had deteriorated through rot and needed to be replaced.
The clock faces therefore had to be removed to provide access to the damaged structure and allow the necessary repair work to take place.
The supporting frame also required structural repairs, particularly important because of the considerable weight of the lead roof above.
Structural and leadwork repairs
Temple Leadworks carried out repairs to the structural frame before replacing all four deteriorated sides of the clocktower.
The project also included repairs to the existing leadwork, drawing on our specialist experience in traditional leadwork and the restoration of older buildings and structures.
With the structural and leadwork repairs completed, the clocktower could then be carefully reassembled.
Restoring the clocktower
As part of the finishing work, the clocktower was redecorated and the clock faces were painted before being refitted.
The combination of structural timber repairs, leadwork and careful finishing transformed the badly deteriorated clocktower while retaining its distinctive appearance.

The completed work received a positive response from Ciaran MacCullagh, Conservation Officer:

The before-and-after photographs demonstrate the extent of the deterioration and the transformation following the restoration work.
